Today, August 1st 2024, marks Earth Overshoot Day – a crucial reminder of the urgent need to reassess our way of life and consumption habits.

The Earth Overshoot Day officially marks the point in the year when humanity’s demand for ecological resources exceeds what the Earth can regenerate within that same year. This continuous deficit is currently sustained by the depletion of ecological reserves and the accumulation of waste. Alarmingly, this date continues to arrive earlier each year.
To determine the date of Earth Overshoot Day, the Global Footprint Network calculates the number of days the Earth’s biocapacity can satisfy humanity’s Ecological Footprint. The subsequent days represent the period of global overshoot. The calculation is based on dividing the Earth’s biocapacity (the total ecological resources the planet generates in a year) by humanity’s Ecological Footprint (the annual demand for resources) and the multiplying the result by the number of days in the year.
It is therefore increasingly urgent that we adopt concrete actions to reduce our excessive consumption of resources.
Let’s reflect on this.
