ISO 14064 | Carbon Footprint of Organization (CFO)
CFO: analysis and consulting
Introduction
Why do you want to measure your Carbon Footprint of Organization?
I want to understand my emission profile and streamline our business processes.
I just need the certification
Carbon Footprint of Organization (CFO)
What is a Carbon Footprint of Organization?
A Carbon Footprint of Organization represents the total amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated directly or indirectly by a company’s activities over a specific period.
It is typically expressed in tonnes of Co2 equivalent, a metric that accounts for various greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide.
The most widely recognized international standards for corporate GHG reporting are the GHG Protocol and the ISO 14064-1 standard.

CFO calculation based on GHG Protocol
CFO calculation based on GHG Protocol
The Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) is the leading international standard for measuring and managing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for companies, public entities and organizations. Emissions are categorized into three main “Scopes”.
- Established methodology, the de-facto standard for voluntary reporting and ESG disclosures
- Comprehensive classification, full breakdown of emissions into Scope 1, 2 and 3
- Flexible and practical approach, no mandatory requirement for formal certification
- Strategic launchpad, an ideal starting point for implementing decarbonization roadmaps
- ESG rating compatibility, highly recognized and valued within ESG rating frameworks
SCOPE 1
Direct emissions from sources owned or controlled by the company (e.g. emissions from fuel combustion in boilers, furnaces and company-owned vehicles).
SCOPE 2
Indirect emissions from the generation of purchased energy consumed by the company (e.g. electricity, heating or steam provided by third parties but used in operational processes or facilities).
SCOPE 3
Other indirect emissions related to company activities but occurring from sources outside its direct control (e.g. purchased goods and services, external logistics, business travel, the use of sold products and their end-of-life treatment).
Calculation based on ISO 14064-1
CFO calculation based on ISO 14064-1
The ISO 14064-1 standard provides a structured, certifiable approach to quantifying corporate greenhouse gas emissions. It ensures methodological rigor, data transparency and global recognition.
- Comprehensive measurement, full quantification of direct and indirect emissions (Scope 1, 2 and 3)
- Third-party certification, audit-ready data that guarantees accuracy and compliance
- Stringent formal requirements, designed to meet strict regulatory standards and public tender (procurement)criteria
- Strategic launchpad, a robust foundation for implementing long-term decarbonization roadmaps
- ESG rating performance, maximizes value and credibility within ESG scoring and rating frameworks
THE BENEFITS
Why measure your Carbon Footprint of Organization?
Carbon Footprint of Organization (CFO) mandates
Who is required to measure their Carbon Footprint?
- Large public-interest entities: companies subject to the CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive) for their sustainability reporting.
- Public procurement participants: businesses bidding on public tenders that include mandatory environmental criteria (CAM)
- Supply chain partners: suppliers of large corporate groups that are required to report their Scope 3 emissions
- Energy intensive industries: sectors included in the EU ETS (Emissions Trading System)

FAQ
What are the main differences between ISO 14064-1 and the GHG Protocol?
The primary difference lies solely in how emissions are classified; the calculation methodologies themselves are fully aligned and yield equivalent results. Specifically, the GHG Protocol categorizes emission sources into three Scopes (1,2 and 3), whereas ISO 14064-1 organizes them into six more granular categories.
In short, while the labels and data organization may change, the core substance of the analysis remains identical across both standards.
How do i know whether to choose the GHG Protocol or ISO 14064-1?
We recommend choosing the GHG Protocol if:
- you are focused on voluntary reporting for stakeholders
- you require operational flexibility in how you manage data
- you are at the beginning of your sustainability journey
On the other hand, ISO 14064-1 is the better fit if:
- you require formal third-party certification
- you must meet specific regulatory requirements or tender criteria
- you are looking for official recognition of your carbon data
- your clients or partners specifically demand ISO-standard compliance
My company is small, do i really need this?
Yes. Your larger clients will soon need your data for their own sustainability reports. Between two competing suppliers, you want to be the one who’s already prepared.
Can I just do this myself with an online calculator?
If you just want a random number to clear your conscience, sure. But if you want a document that can withstand an audit and actually drive your business forward, you need Ecoloop.
