ISCC PLUS

What is ISCC PLUS certification?

ISCC PLUS is a voluntary international standard that guarantees raw material sustainability and traceability throughout the entire supply chain, supporting the transition toward a circular economy and bioeconomy. Unlike the EU version, it applies globally to all non-regulated sectors (plastics, packaging, chemicals, textiles, food and animal feed).

  • Full traceability: complete monitoring of sustainable material from its point of origin to the finished product, certifying every actor in the supply chain.
  • Environmental protection: a strict ban on converting high-biodiversity or high-carbon-stock land (zero-deforestation policy).
  • Emission reduction: rigorous calculation and verification of greenhouse gases (GHG) throughout the entire product life cycle.

Every transaction is accompanied by a Sustainability Declaration, the official document certifying the actual fossil resource savings for each certified product.

ISCC PLUS

Why is it important?

In a market driven by strict anti-greenwashing regulations like the EU Green Deal, the international ISCC PLUS certification offers companies a concrete, third-party verified competitive advantage. Applicable to sectors such as plastics, packaging and chemical, the standard guarantees emission reductions and zero deforestation across the entire supply chain.

Thanks to the mass balance approach, companies can physically mix sustainable and traditional materials during production, mathematically allocating the “green” share to the final product without the need to duplicate manufacturing plants.

FAQ

What is the difference between ISCC PLUS and ISCC EU?

ISCC EU is a mandatory scheme for biofuel producers operating within the European market regulated by the RED II Directive. In contrast, ISCC PLUS is a voluntary tool applicable globally across all non-regulated sectors, including packaging, plastics, chemicals, textiles and food. The two certifications address different needs and are not interchangeable.

What is Mass Balance and why is it so important?

Mass Balance is a chain-of-custody accounting method that allows sustainable and traditional materials to be physically mixed during production. The “sustainable” share of the output is mathematically allocated in proportion to the certified inputs entered into the process. It is the tool that makes ISCC PLUS practically applicable in industry, as it eliminates the need to build separate production lines for sustainable materials.

Which feedstocks can be certified under ISCC PLUS?

ISCC PLUS covers four categories of alternative feedstocks: bio materials (from sustainable agricultural and forestry biomass), bio-circular materials (from biological waste and residues), circular materials (from mechanical or chemical recycling of fossil waste, such as mixed plastics and textile waste) and renewable materials (produced using renewable energy as a reaction input).

How long does ISCC PLUS certification last and how is it renewed?

The ISCC PLUS certificate is valid for 12 months from the date of issuance. Renewal requires a new annual audit conducted by the accredited certification body to verify ongoing compliance with the standard’s requirements.

Do all supply chain actors need to be certified?

Yes. The core principle of ISCC PLUS is that every site handling or transferring certified material – from the point of origin to the brand owner – must be individually certified. It is not enough for only the initial producers or the final brand to hold certification: every step must maintain the integrity of the chain of custody to ensure the validity of the sustainability claims.
